Why are grass-fed foods more expensive?? Part 1
Hi there!!
Trying to figure out why grass-fed foods are more expensive & not sure if they're worth it or if you can fit the extra cost into your budget??š²
This video & the one Iām sending out next week will give you a bit inside story & also how we and some of our customers make it work!š
But firstā¦ howās this cold weather treating you??š Are you a fan of cold weather or do you prefer the barefoot/sandal days??
As a momā¦ I definitely prefer sandal days!!! Ummmā¦ whoās coat is lying on the floor...AGAIN??š¤Øš¤
When I recorded this videoš¤³ it was still nice & warmā¦ & now, well...itās COLD!!š²
Iām sitting here with a hoodie wrapped around me thinking I need to make me some hot chocolate!! One of my favs of cold weather!!
Okā¦ so there are lots of reasons grass-fed products are more expensive than their supermarket counterpartsā¦š„©šš„
In this blog, Iām going to highlight 2 reasons we believe are the biggest culpritsā¦. Yes, theyāre intertwined somewhatā¦
#1 is Grains!
Grains are higher in calories, therefore grains encourage the cows to grow much faster and cheaper than the cows fed grass.š¾š
Seems like a good idea, I mean raise the calves quicker, sell them sooner, have money to invest back into your farm sooner!!š²š²
Untilā¦ you have health issues in your herdā¦š„
Cows stomachs arenāt made to digest grain & can cause weakened immune systems (& a host of other things),
add in antibiotics to help counteract that, & eventually, thatās transferred to the milk & meat. š¤¢
When cows are fed grassš¾ā¦ it takes more acres to feed them, but we have noticed a huge decrease in cow ailments!!!
They are healthy & happy: THE BEST way to produce healthy meat & milk!!š„©š§š„
If we want to remain healthy & happy... our food sources need to come from animals & plants who are healthy & happy & fed what God intended them to eat!! š
Grass is much higher in key nutrients like Omega-3s and B vitamins, & result in steaks that are leaner, healthier, & much more flavorfulā¦
thus why grass-fed meats are strongly recommended by the Paleo diet! š
It is so exciting for us when we get testimonies like the one above!! š
It makes all the hard work & time we invest sooo worth it!! To provide ālifegiving foodā for other families is a calling we donāt take for granted!
#2 is government subsidiesā¦
Grains (corn & soybeans) are the largest feedlot costs.
Grain producers can apply for & receive direct government payments to produce grains each yearā¦
think taxpayer moneyš²š²ā¦
thus the true cost of grain production doesnāt show up in the marketplaceā¦.
aka when you are buying your beef & dairy at the supermarket.
Grass farmers do not have this advantage...nor do we want itā¦ we just want to be paid a fair wage for our labor.š
The real question is āShould government subsidize the real cost of foodā? ...a loaded question!
Here at Borntrager Dairy, we do not take any government payments, loans, grants, etcā¦ our prices directly reflect our production costsā¦
So to summarize it all up, supermarket prices do not reflect the true costs of producing meatsā¦ itās subsidized by the government.
š£š£And in all reality, itās a completely different productā¦
āLife-givingā foods are produced on a healthy, sustainable farm, where the animals are fed their natural diet.
Know your farmer, šØāš¾ Know your food!!š
Thatās it for today! š
Initially, I had intended to answer the āHow to budget for grass-fed products?ā
but felt the video would be too lengthy & so I have that answer to that question in Part 2.
I plan to send that out next week!! Look for it!! I expect youāll be surprised! I had soo much fun recording that one!šš¤øāāļø
Listen to the video & let me know what you think!!
And as always, if you have a testimony from using our products, weād LOVE to hear it!!š
Blessings!
