How do we have Fresh, Grass fed Milk in Winter? A Peek Behind the Scenes..
Loyd Borntrager
"The milk is sweeter. What changed?”
I get asked this quite a bit this time of year. 🥰
Short answer: “Winter feeding has Begun.”
Long Answer…
Have you wondered how we are able to produce 100% grass-fed milk... even in winter?
Here's a bit "behind the scenes" info.
During the spring & summer months when the grasses in our pastures are growing our beautiful 'oreo' mama cows enjoy every bite.
These fresh grasses are loaded with nutrition and energy to produce the finest milk.
In the winter, the pasture grasses are dormant & no longer produce the energy dairy cows need to produce fresh milk every day.🌾
Therefore, we bring in organic hay bales from area farmers.
This is a great way for us to feed our cows during the cooler months.
However, there's something about eating fresh green grass in the pastures that produces energy for dairy cows to create our delicious fresh milk.
Thus, we needed to figure out a solution to produce 'green energy' to keep the cows in optimal condition + produce milk in the 'dormant' winter months.
And that's where this awesomeness comes in.
Fodder.
I think the cows secretly smile when they start getting this treat in the fall.
They absolutely love it & are known to fight over it. 😃
Fodder? What is it?
Sprouted barley seeds.
We seed it & water it. And watch it grow.
On the 8th day, we harvest it & chop it up with hay and the cows excitedly chomp away.
Thus we can have our amazing FRESH unprocessed milk, even in winter.
Yes, it takes lots of work.
however, you (& we 😉) like drinking Fresh milk all year long.
